Hystorically memebers of the royal family had no need for surnames as they were known as Prince or Princess's. The British Royal family had no surname before 1917, only the name of the dynasty they belonged, these dynasties change withevery succession. Queen Vicotias eldest sons Edward VII belonged to House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, his son George V (Queen Elizabeths Father) succeeded the throne in 1910. In 1917 became radical change as he change the name Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to Windsor as a result of Anti-German feeling during the 1st world war. This was confirmed when Elizabeth took the throne in 1952 and it was not only the House name but it was then the Family name of montbatton-Windsor. This is still the case unless Prince Charles chooses to alter the present desicions when he becomes king, he will continue to be the House of Windsor and his grandchildren will use the surname Montbatton-Windsor
