Question:
When two royals marry...?

I was thinking: When was the last-time two royals married each other? I'm not well-versed on this, but in recent years, have any decided to wed? What made me think about this is Princess Charlotte of Cambridge. Should Princess Madeleine of Sweden have a boy next month,it would be a possibility. Not in the sense that It would be arranged, but what if they legitimately loved each other? Charlotte would take on her husband's titles, so she would be a princess of both Sweden and the UK, right?

In the British monarchy, the last two royals to marry (senior royal to senior royal, that is) are Princess Elizabeth (now queen) who married Prince Phillip of Greece (now Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh). Charles and Diana, George and Elizabeth are examples of senior royals marrying minor ones. Queen Elizabeth's Grandfather, George V married Princess Mary of Teck. Before that, you have to go all the way back to Henry VIII in the 1500s to find a monarch marrying a commoner (and he executed or exiled the commoners he married, so not a great example).

In the British royal family, it was when Princess Marina of Greece married the Queen's uncle, Prince George, the Duke of Kent. I believe that was in the 1930's.

The ex-King of Greece married a princess of Denmark back in the 60's.

There have been some more recent marriages between royals and aristocrats but none between royals and royals that I can think of.

Prince Philip and the Queen since both are descended from Queen Victoria as well as Christian IX of Denmark. Philip renounced his royal titles after the Greek throne was abolished, but he is still royal by birth.

The woman simply adds the husband's titles to her own, assuming the husband's titles and styles.

When Princess Sophia Margarita Victoria Frederika of Greece and Denmark married Prince Juan Carlos, in 1962,she became Princess of Spain.Sophia used her husband's title the most because he was heir to the throne of Spain. And when her husband became King, Sophia became Queen Consort.

After her marriage to then-Prince Juan Carlos, Sophia could be known as The Princess of Spain, Princess Sophia of Sofia, or even Princess Juan Carlos!

Princess Anne-Marie of Denmark married her third cousin, Constantine, in 1964. She became Queen of Greece, as well as remaining a Princess of Denmark.

One of them usually renounces their titles, depending on where they go to live. Then they get new titles after they move. HRH Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark became the HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, HRH Princess Marina of Kent became HRH The Duchess of Kent.

I think when they get divorced they have the option of keeping their titles or going back to their old ones.
