In the book, Mr Darcy owns Pemberley (which is the "miserable half" of the Derbyshire estate, according to what Elizabeth Bennet [Keira Knightley's character] said in the movie) and has an income of £10,000 a year. Perhaps he's just a very wealthy fictional Englishman - if your definition of "aristocrat" includes the upper class, I guess Mr Darcy would fit the description.

If Mr. Darcy inherited his wealth and power, he was an aristocrat. Otherwise, he was just rich.

good question. at certain points it seemed like he was a little of both. i'd say he was a very rich man with aristocratic tendancies. he could have been a full-blown aristocrat, but seemed to not be into that lifestyle 100%. just my opinion. btw, the movie sucked. i didn't care for donald sutherland or that british chick from pirates of the carribean.

BE is the first one to go down the right track. If his aunt was 'Lady Catherine' (and assuming her title was used correctly) then he is the grandson of a duke, marquess or earl. He would not have a title but one of his parents would have been at least 'The Honourable'.
