Question:
Would anyone actually call Prince William "William, Duke of Cambridge"?

I heard that that's the title he chose to go by after his marriage, so do people address him that way? It would seem odd to ignore the higher title, especially when he's not just any prince; he's second in line to the throne.

Actually you've got it backwards.

A Royal Dukedom (a Dukedom held by a Prince) is a higher title than simply being a Prince. If you're a Duke then you're just a Duke, and if you're a Prince you're just a Prince, but if you're a Royal Duke you're both a Prince and a Duke.

William's full title is His Royal Highness Prince William Arthur Philip Louis, Duke of Cambridge, Earl of Strathearn, Baron Carrickfergus, Royal Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, Knight of the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle. This is often shortened to simply HRH Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, KG, KT. To shorten it even more, sometimes he gets called HRH Prince William (because that's what people knew him as for so long), and sometimes he gets called HRH the Duke of Cambridge, which is the proper way to refer to him.

His official title is "Prince William, Duke of Cambridge", or "The Duke of Cambridge" in shorthand.

Peerages such as Dukedoms and Earldoms are given upon marriage and have been since time immemorial. It's tradition for a peerage or three to be granted by the monarch, but most people will simply refer to them by their old title since it's familiar. There's no obligation for the public.

He is referred to as The Duke of Cambridge and his full title is HRH Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge. He is still Prince William of Wales, and when Prince Charles becomes King, Prince William will then become the Prince of Wales.

And the Queen gave him the title Duke of Cambridge upn his wedding.

If you are thinking of "Diana, Princess of Wales" that was actually her "married name" if you like and upon her divorce after being stripped of her title of HRH, that is what she then became known as.

Only divorced royal women use their given names followed by their former titles. Prince William is the Duke of Cambridge. He is known as the "HRH Prince William, Duke of Cambridge." That is how he is referred to in the media, and that is what The Queen decided to call him. It was she who "decided" to call him that. The Peerage title is higher than his princely title, believe it or not. The Duke of Edinburgh is the highest title in the United Kingdom among males.

A Royal Duke actually ranks higher than a prince, he is however HRH The Duke of Cambridge.

His title in short is Prince William, Duke of Cambridge. He is meant to be called 'the Duke of Cambridge' and addressed as Your Royal Highness. 'Prince' is included before his name because he was born a prince and still is one, while his wife is simply 'Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge' because her title exists by courtesy and she is not a princess.

A prince who has a peerage outranks all without one; to call him the Duke is correct and uses his higher title. He is called 'Prince William' more often because the public have called him that his entire life and are rarely fond of using proper titles, at least since the time of Diana.

A Prince shall always trump a Duke, dear Nonny. Therefore, if one were to refer to dear William as a Duke, it would have the effect of putting his considerable nose out of joint. In a similar vein, if one were to refer to yours truly as a lowly Viscount or Baron rather than an exalted Earl one would use ones Noble physiognomy to emit a most scabrous scowl that would surely set you right.

William, Duke of Cambridge is his official title, it was what Queen Elizabeth decided on and that is who William is. As a Prince he has little income or responsibility other that what is given him by the Queen. As the Duke of Cambridge he has a title, an income. lands and and a home.
