There are two types of queen: queen regnant and queen consort.

A queen regnant is the equal of a king. She reigns in her own right, having inherited the throne from a previous monarch who was her blood relative.

Queen Elizabeth II is a queen regnant. She inherited the throne of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland on the death of her father, King George VI.

A queen consort is merely the wife of a king. She has no powers, no special rights.

There is no current Queen Consort. There is ONLY a Queen Regnant, that is, Queen Elizabeth, because there is no king.

There will not be a king -- and therefore there will not be a queen consort -- until Queen Elizabeth dies some years from now.

Is there some reason that people are utterly incapable grasping that?!

Yes indeed, dear boy. Trevor Camel can see what you are getting at. A Queen (regnant) ruling on her own is just as high in status as a King ruling on his own. She doesn't need to be called King Queen etc.

Now, if a King is married, then generally speaking his wife is called Queen. And here comes to tricky part.........the King's wife (Queen (consort) ) is not as high in status as the Queen mentioned earlier who reigns the Kingdom.

Did you notice the other catch? Even with a Queen in charge, it is still known as a Kingdom rather than Queendom.

I am beginning to confuse even myself and therefore, I shall provide the link below leading to a wonderful article from my dear friends at Wikipedia which will surely turn the muddy waters into a pristine, clear substance.

'Queen'

Addressed as 'Her Majesty.

The present monarch is described as 'Queen Regnant'. because she is the Head of State. There by 'reigns over us'.

Her mother Queen Elizabeth , the Queen Mother'. was not the Head of State. It was her husband , King George (VI).

When King George was reigning , he was called King Regnant, and his wife, Queen Elizabeth, as 'Queen Consort'.

In England ,we do not have a 'King Consort'. So the present Queen's husband , Prince Philip, is described as 'Prince Consort'.

What are you talking about? a king is called a king, a queen is called a queen, you address them both as your majesty, then sir for a king and ma'am for a queen. Our present queen is called her majesty queen elizabeth the second.

The reigning Queen is a Queen Regnant. Elizabeth can be called The Queen, Queen Elizabeth...

There is not a king when there is a Queen REGNANT, the hereditary monarch in charge.

The rankings are:

King/Queen Regnant for the hereditary reigning monarch

Queen/Prince Consort for the non-reigning spouse

Prince/Princess--- for the heir to the throne it is Prince of Wales for the heir, and Princess of Wales for the Spouse; the hereditary Princess is just the heiress apparent

Female King is a Zarina,,,,,Queen Elizabeth I I is just a Queen (regular position of female power monarchy)...Reason why she is above her mate(prince Phillip of Greece) is .She was the first female heir of a second born son of a King.Whose brother(Edward first born) was removed for marital sin (Wallace Simpson and Adultry issues)....Thus King George would was already married to a Former Lady heir Elizabeth (Queen Mum when her daughter took the throne)....Queen Elizabeth I I high rank is because she and Princess Marget were King George's only heirs .Thus when married to Prince Phillip of Greece ,she was Queen Appeirant by assumption.....Holding the title of UK ,head heir by her father's assumption....After the removal of a First heir "willing sin" ,having a affair while "his wife to be "was still married to a British friend.....George sinned against the Crown and rights to his birth rank. When he married Wallace Simpson (working cloth socialite)....Three time diviocee, nonroyal birth female and Adultrier in union,to his male friend......

You call her a Queen.

She is a Queen regnant, as opposed to a consort, but the title is the same. Only queen regnants have numbers after their names. There have been many Queen Elizabeths, but only two who have reigned as the monarch, hence the present Queen is Elizabeth II.

This is not difficult. A man is a king, a woman is a queen. Simple as that.

Queen. More specifically, Queen Regent, although that phrase is never used when addressing one.
